Foreword

"She was the first. She was not the last."

— Daria Montague

Some paths in life announce themselves clearly. Mine did not.

Before I ever held a tattoo machine in my hand, I lived in a very different world — the corporate world of banking. Structured, rational, respectable. A world of numbers, expectations, and polished surfaces. And yet, somewhere beneath that life, something quieter had been waiting for me.

One day, I woke up and understood, with a clarity I could no longer ignore, that I needed to begin again. I chose tattooing — a choice that made little sense to many people around me, and yet felt deeply true to me. As a child growing up in the Soviet Union, I had studied art. That early education had never really left me; it had simply gone silent for a time, waiting patiently beneath the obligations of adulthood.

What drew me to tattooing was not rebellion, and it was not fashion. What fascinated me was something more subtle and more profound: the language of body art — the way it could hold meaning, mark identity, carry memory, or restore confidence. I was drawn to what it meant, not merely how it looked.
